Two white marble frieze blocks: the first (0.685 long) bears the mark ΑΑ; the second (0.97) has ΒΑ.

Inscribed in 3 lines on the fascia. The text began on a third, missing, block to the left.

Translation

[The Council and the People honoured Ti(berius) Clau]dius Diogenes, high-priest of Asia, and sebastophant, and contest-president[...] benefactor, just, lover of mankind, lover of the citizens, nomothete, twice gy[mnasiarch and] having carried out all [the other offices] unsurpassably.

Commentary

This may well be the man who restored the Sebasteion portico, under Claudius and Nero. See discussion by Reynolds, loc. cit. below, and 2, 18.

Locations

Theatre: stage area Theatre proskenion frieze. Inscribed on the blocks which make up the cornice, of the Doric order, above 8.1, the inscription of Zoilos, across the back of the Theatre stage. The blocks have simple moulding above, supporting water spouts in the form of lions' heads; the underside has a decoration of mutules. Findspot (1989), restored north of 566, just south of porta regia.
