Description of Monument

A rectangular white marble statue base shaft (1.01 × 0.48 × 0.60) with moulding, broken above and below. The stone was re-used; on the opposite face there is a half-moon in relief, suggesting that it perhaps had had a religious function. It stood rather awkwardly on a plinth formed by cutting down another base.

Edition Ἀγαθῆι Τύχηι τὸν ἀνανεωτὴν καὶ κτίστην τῆς μητροπόλεως καὶ εὐεργέτην πάσης Καρίας Φλάβιον Παλμᾶτον τὸν περίβλεπτον ὑπατικὸν καὶ ἐπαίχοντα τὸν τόπον τοῦ μεγαλοπρεπεστάτου βικαρίου, Φλάβιος Ἀθήνεος ὁ λαμπρότατος πατὴρ τῆς λαμπροτάτης Ἀφροδεισιέων μητροπόλεως εὐχαριστῶν ἀνέθη κεν
Translation To Good Fortune. The renewer and founder of the metropolis and benefactor of all Caria, Flavius Palmatus, spectabilis consular, also holding the position of the magnificentissimus vicar; Flavius Atheneus, the clarissimus pater of the most splendid clarissima metropolis of the Aphrodisians, set up this statue of Palmatus in gratitude.

Found: Tetrastoon: standing against the east side of the northernmost column of the west colonnade; several other inscribed bases (8.407, and probably 8.405 and 8.406) stood in similar positions against other columns of this colonnade; . Excavated by the NYU expedition in 1972 (SBI 1) together with its accompanying statue.
