White marble building block (0.34 × 0.47 × 0.34) without moulding, but with a recessed edge on all sides.

The inscription is cut on the face, some way down the stone, and runs into the frame on both sides.

Translation

The council and the people honoured Mithradates son of Athenagoras, a fine and good man, and adorned with all virtue.

Commentary

This text was one of a group cut on the family tomb whose elements were incorporated into the walls at the south east gate of the city: 12.410 (= MAMA 462), 13.302 (=474, 475, 476) and 12.409 (Walls 151) The group is published and discussed by Reynolds 1999.

On the tomb from which it was found fallen, which had been incorporated in the Walls, South-east Gate. Museum (1978).

Found during the clearing of the East Gate in 1904 and recorded by Gaudin (108), 'la face engagée dans la maçonnerie'; by the MAMA expedition; by the NYU expedition.
