Description of Monument

White marble garland sarcophagus. See Isik 176 for a full description.

Description of Text

Inscribed on the tabella (0.195 × 0.345) from which a previous inscription has been erased. Line 1 on the upper moulding, lines 2 ff. inscribed within the panel; lines 3-6, 9-12 impinge on the right moulding. Very worn.

Description of Letters

Irregular and poorly formed, 0.01-0.015; cursive alpha, omega and mu used sporadically, square sigma.

Date

Late third/early fourth century (titles).

Edition Ἡ σορὸς καὶ ὁ περικίμε νος τόπος τού τω μνημείῳ ἐ στὶν Μάρκου Αὐρηλίου Λεοντ ήου Αὐχενίου διδασκάλου φίλων καὶ Μάρκου Αὐρηλίου Παπα αίου Πολυχρο νίου διοικη τοῦ Παπίου πο λιτευομένου.
Translation The sarcophagus, and the area surrounding this memorial, is (the property of) M. Aurelius Leontius Auchenios, teacher of friends, and M. Aurelius Papaios Polychronios, steward of Papias, curialis.
Commentary

The principal indication of date is the title of Papias' master; see discussion at IX.11.
